BRIERLEYS IN WW1
27038 PTE. J. C. BRIERLEY. R.D.C.
I haven’t been able to locate John Charles Brierley in the Censuses. His name, rank, service number and age at death are recorded in CWGC. This is complemented by SDGW: he lived in Oldham and enlisted there. He was born in 1861 and served first in the Manchester Regiment with service number 20011 but later he served at home with the Royal Defence Corps, in 309 Protection Company. He died in Cardiff on 8 April 1917, aged 56. According to the Register of Soldiers’ Effects, his legatee was a Miss Selina Scholes. Selina was a spinster, born in 1870, who lived near Lees, Oldham.
