BRIERLEYS IN WW1
65552 SJT. G. E. F. BRIERLEY. YORKS.R.
I have virtually no information about this Brierley. His full name is Gerald Ernest Ferdinand Brierley; he was born in Leicester in 1890. His parents must have died when he was young as he appears in the 1901 Census as the adopted son of Robert Eveleigh (b. 1859 in Poplar), an optical lens maker. At the time, they were living at 3 Belle Vue Street, Fulford, York. Robert either moved back to London or died before 1911. In any event, Gerald married Louie Gooderham, in York, in 1915. The couple had a son, Roland, in 1916.
Gerald died on 26 November 1918, whilst serving with the Yorkshire Regiment, at their depot in Fulford. He was 28 years old. Despite his very distinctive name, I have found no 1891 or 1911 Census records for him. And I have found no medal records for him either – probably indicating that he was engaged in training, recruitment or logistics. If you are reading this and you know who this man is, please do get in touch.
